For Terry Tucker, a man of incredibly diverse experiences—from college basketball player and corporate marketer to police officer and school security consultant—one of his greatest tests arrived in the form of a rare and aggressive cancer. On a compelling episode of "Your Head in Mind," Terry candidly shared his 12-year battle with melanoma, offering profound insights into the power of resilience and the deliberate choices that have allowed him not just to survive, but to truly live.

The Diagnosis: A Call to Embrace the Suck


Terry’s journey into the world of cancer began unexpectedly. While coaching girls' high school basketball, a persistent callus on his left foot led him to a podiatrist. What seemed minor quickly escalated into a life-altering diagnosis: an incredibly rare form of melanoma on the bottom of his foot, unrelated to sun exposure. The prognosis was grim; he was told he had two years to live, with surgery as the only immediate option.

Sometimes life meets us with difficult decisions

"I went through all the stages that we would associate with grief," Terry recalled, detailing the initial shock, denial, and anger. As a father to a high school daughter, bargaining with a higher power for more time soon followed. But ultimately, Terry made a pivotal decision: to "embrace the suck." He understood that while he couldn't control the hand he was dealt, he could control how he played it. This mindset became the cornerstone of his resilience.


The Battle: Enduring Interferon and Amputations


Terry's fight has been relentless. For nearly five years, he self-injected Interferon weekly, enduring debilitating flu-like symptoms for days after each dose. "Imagine having a horrible case of the flu every week for five years," he described, conveying the sheer physical and mental toll. There were days when simply moving from his bed to the couch felt like a victory, a state he called "the not dying camp," rather than truly living.

Living with Cancer requires a lot of resilience

His battle also involved significant physical losses: his foot was amputated in 2018, followed by his leg during the height of COVID-19. Even today, he continues to receive regular treatment for tumors in his lungs. Yet, throughout this ongoing struggle, Terry has maintained an active role in his treatment, questioning doctors and understanding all aspects of his care. He emphasizes that doctors, like "bookies," can only give statistics; they don't know the deeply personal reasons—like walking his daughter down the aisle—that fuel a patient's will to live.


Strategies for an Unyielding Mindset


Terry's ability to not just survive but thrive through such adversity stems from a powerful blend of intentional choices and daily practices:


  • Active Participation in Treatment: Instead of passively accepting his fate, Terry engages with his doctors, understanding treatments, side effects, and expected outcomes.


  • Dietary Adjustments: Observing that cancer cells thrive on sugar during PET scans, he proactively shifted to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, reducing bread, desserts, and alcohol.


  • Embracing Discomfort: Every day, Terry intentionally does one thing that scares or challenges him, from taking cold showers to simply sitting alone with his thoughts. He believes these small acts of discomfort build the resilience needed for life's inevitable major disasters.

    Daily habits can keep you grounded

  • Unplugging Daily: Recognizing society's aversion to boredom, Terry dedicates 10 minutes each day to unplugging and sitting with his thoughts, fostering a greater comfort with his own mind.


  • Spiritual Practice: He spends about an hour daily in prayer and listens to a 528 frequency tone, incorporating practices that bring him a sense of well-being. He also practices Wim Hof-style breathing.


  • Curiosity and Lifelong Learning: Drawing from his experience as a hostage negotiator, Terry emphasizes being curious about others and being a lifelong learner, primarily through reading biographies.


  • The Power of Choice and Grit: Terry firmly believes that life should be shaped by our own deliberate choices, not by external circumstances or the decisions of others. He champions "grit"—the unwavering perseverance to move forward, even when obstacles arise.
